Unique architectural ensemble of the 17th–18th centuries. St. John Chrysostom Church (1665) with a bell tower. Saulino Village

Project curators—Olga Prigodina, Deputy Director for Scientific Work at the Kargopol Museum, and Tatiana Korobova, the museum’s Chief Architect—synthesized a vast archive of historical sources concerning wooden churches, which formed the basis of the exhibition that presents the complete history of wooden architecture in Kargopol for the first time.
The exhibition sections explore the unique trajectory of wooden architecture in the Russian North—its traditions and the craftsmanship of northern builders. A timeline vividly illustrates the peak and scale of wooden construction from the 15th to the 19th centuries. The exhibition is further supplemented by a section showcasing the tools used to create these temples: axes, adzes, and pegs.
