The system demonstrates the life of a former Soviet society. Ilya and Emilia Kabakova depict a conflict between real and ideal, a struggle to develop their own identity in a limited area of authoritarian society.

Although he illustrates the political system of Soviet totalitarianism, he refers to any society as a whole that has a strong influence on the individual and sometimes forces him to submit and forget who he really is.
