About the competition
SmallShorts is an international student festival of screen arts. We have been presenting short movies by young creators from all over the world since 2019.
We have been looking for the most outstanding cinema experiments for six years, but now it is time to take the pinhole glasses off and pick new lenses. In 2025, we are expecting not only experimental movies and animation, but also works that master the conventions of feature and documentary films.
The festival will be a platform for bold ideas, valuable networking opportunities and bright debuts for the seventh time. Your potential friends and colleagues will gather here, ready to share their experience, skills and creative energy.

Screen I — Fiction and documentary films
Requirements to projects
The video has to be up to 20 minutes long
The creator of the project must be a student
Embedded English subtitles and a link not only to the video hosting site, but also to downloading the work are required
Requirements to participants
A participant must be a student of a college or a university.
Stages of the competition
December 20, 2024 — April 7, 2025 — submitted projects are accepted
The final screening will take place in June 2025 Screenings will take place at the Zotov Center in Moscow and at the Levashovsky Bakery in St. Petersburg. The exact dates of the screenings, as well as the additional cultural program, will be announced later.

Daria Chernova — editor of the samizdat «K!», film curator, lecturer.
Jana Rot — artist.
Dima Makhno — artist, designer, co-founder of the samizdat «FLEXUS))».
Awarding the winners
The awarding of the winners of the competition, as well as participants that will be awarded special prizes, is going to take place at the Zotov Center, where the final show will occur.
Degree programmes
HSE ART AND DESIGN SCHOOL offers the «Contemporary art» academic direction where students can receive a bachelor’s and master’s degree and participate in short-term study opportunities. A project-based approach to learning, the creation of a professional digital portfolio, practice teachers and involvement in real creative industries allow our alumni to become winners of international awards, employees of successful companies and studios, high-class professionals in the fields of design, fashion, contemporary art, photography, theater, programming, game design, media, advertising, cinema, animation, sound art and visual effects.
