HSE ART AND DESIGN SCHOOL and the Russian-Armenian (Slavic) University, along with the Sergei Parajanov Museum and the Artist’s Union of Armenia, continue to explore the national cultural context and announce the start of the Parajanov—100 international online competition, celebrating the centenary of Sergei Parajanov.

Sergei Parajanov — an outstanding film director, screenwriter, artist, author of the films Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors (1965), The Color of Pomegranates (1968), Ashik Kerib (1988) and others.

Parajanov’s vast artistic legacy includes drawings, collages, assemblages, installations, mosaics, and other works. Many of these pieces are housed in the Sergei Parajanov Museum in Yerevan, while others are held in private collections. In memory of Sergei Parajanov, we are announcing an open competition in the Collage in Animation category.

Participants can submit their projects for the competition on the hsedesign.ru website with no restrictions on the number of entries. Winning works will receive cash prizes and be displayed at various exhibition venues in Yerevan, such as the Sergei Parajanov Museum, the Artist’s Union of Armenia, and in public spaces in June 2024.

Collage is one of the techniques of visual art and graphic design that has been used throughout the 20th century by the most significant artists, from Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso to such masters as Alexander Rodchenko, Vera Stepanova, Gustav Klutsis, El Lissitzky, and other classical avant-garde artists. Sergei Parajanov actively utilized the techniques of collage and assemblage in many of his artistic works. In the 21st century, collage remains one of the most significant techniques in visual art and design.

project requirements

- The duration should not exceed 120 seconds. - The project can be submitted in Armenian, Russian, and English. - Incorporating the Dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Sergei Parajanov title is required, and you can utilize the competition organizers' provided frame or create your own. Ensure that the information and logos of HSE ART AND DESIGN SCHOOL, RAU, the Parajanov Museum, and the Artist’s Union of Armenia are preserved.

- David Avakyan — member of the Board of the St. Petersburg Union of Designers, member of the Expert Commission at the Urban Planning Council of St. Petersburg, general director of the ASGARD Branding Agency - Dmitrij Makonnen — designer, poster artist, director of IZO.EE, editor at posterreview.eu, member of the Designers' Union of Russia, and member of the Graphic Designers' Union of Estonia - Dmitrij Kavka — multidisciplinary artist who creates projects at the intersection of digital and material realities - Vazgen Gilovyan — Industrial designer, calligraphy artist, designer at Artemy Lebedev Studio - Erken Kagarov — artist, designer, and art director who is affiliated with the Russia Designers Association, the Academy of Graphic Design (where he served as vice-president from 2001-2007), Art Directors Club Russia, and the Moscow Union of Artists.

Russian-Armenian (Slavic) University is a partner of the HSE ART AND DESIGN SCHOOL. Collaboratively, they introduced a bachelor’s program in Communication Design in 2023. The university is a prominent institution in Armenia and ranks among the top higher education establishments in both Armenia and the wider region. In the QS EECA (Emerging Europe and Central Asia) University Rankings, the Russian-Armenian University (RAU) has notably improved its standing, surpassing all the country’s leading universities.

The Parajanov Museum in Yerevan is dedicated to the celebrated film director, screenwriter, and artist Sergey Parajanov.

Artist’s Union of Armenia was established in 1932 by the founding president, People’s Artist of the USSR, sculptor Ara Sargsyan. The Union’s responsibilities comprise supporting artists, sculptors, and art historians, fostering the professional growth of its members, broadening their international networks, promoting their creative work, arranging exhibitions, and offering the highest level of support for their endeavors.
